TAMAN NEGARA — THE 130-MILLION-YEAR-OLD LEGEND

Taman Negara is Malaysia’s premier national park and one of the world’s oldest tropical rainforests. Spanning 4,343 square kilometers across the states of Pahang, Kelantan, and Terengganu, this ancient ecosystem has remained undisturbed for millions of years, offering an unparalleled window into the natural history of the Malay Peninsula.

THE PARK AT A GLANCE

  • Size: 4,343 sq km (The largest protected area in Peninsular Malaysia).
  • Highest Peak: Gunung Tahan (2,187 meters)—the highest point in Peninsular Malaysia.
  • Biodiversity: Home to over 10,000 species of plants and 350 species of birds. While elusive, the park is a sanctuary for the Malayan Tiger, Asian Elephant, and Malayan Tapir.

GETTING THERE (UPDATED 2026)

  • By Rail: The KTM "Jungle Train" stops at Jerantut station, connecting from Kuala Lumpur or the East Coast line.

PRACTICAL TRAVEL INFORMATION

  • Best Time to Visit: The dry season from March to September is ideal for trekking and river activities. The monsoon peaks from October to January, which may cause temporary closure of certain trails and river routes.
  • Permits & Fees: All visitors must obtain an entry permit (RM1) and a camera license (RM5) from the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (PERHILITAN) counter at the park entrance.
