The narrow straits of Air Hitam Dalam Educational Forest protect a rare patch of freshwater swamp forest at the northern end of Penang. This quiet sanctuary is home to some of the region’s most striking birds, including the Mangrove Pitta, Ruddy Kingfisher, and Black-and-Red Broadbill. During migration seasons, numerous migratory species also pass through and some remain here for the winter. The forest is likewise one of the best local sites to observe nocturnal birds such as owls and nightjars.
A short distance away lies the coastline of Teluk Air Tawar – Kuala Muda, gazetted as an Important Bird Area (IBA). Every year, thousands of waders and other shorebirds seek refuge here during the northern winter, making this one of the finest wader-watching sites in Malaysia.
