In 2007, DiGi Telecommunications announced five nominees for its third "Amazing Malaysians" project. These individuals were nominated by the public for their extraordinary passion and dedication to heritage and environmental conservation. Among them was Irshad Mobarak, representing the natural heritage of Langkawi.
THE FAMOUS FIVE: GUARDIANS OF HERITAGE
The "Amazing Malaysians" initiative aimed to create awareness among children about the significance of preserving local traditions and environments. The selected practitioners for 2007 were:
- Irshad Mobarak: The Naturalist (Langkawi)
- Chen Voon Fee: The Treasures Keeper (Kuala Lumpur)
- Pak Saad Harun: The Rhythm Master (Negeri Sembilan)
- Joan Marbeck: The Kristang Poet (Melaka)
- Judeth John Baptist: The Culture-Seeker (Sabah)
IRSHAD MOBARAK: THE JUNGLE WALLAH OF LANGKAWI
Irshad Mobarak’s journey into conservation began far from the rainforests. Originally an athlete in the banking sector, a trip to Tioman Island in 1985 sparked a lifelong commitment to the environment. By 2007, Irshad had already spent 17 years calling Langkawi home, serving as a resident naturalist and educator.
For his Amazing Malaysian project, Irshad focused on the next generation. He engaged 100 children in hands-on field experiences—getting them "into the mud" to witness firsthand the effects of deforestation and habitat fragmentation. His mission was clear: to spark an interest in conservation by showing children that Langkawi’s flora and fauna had already lost a significant portion of their natural habitat.
A LEGACY OF CORPORATE RESPONSIBILITY
The project emphasized that heritage is not just about the past, but about putting substance into progress. Through Irshad’s work, high-profile guests and local communities alike were sensitized to the importance of incorporating environmental responsibility into their daily lives and businesses.
