BIRDS OF PREY IN LANGKAWI

JungleWalla Nature Journal | Raptor Spotlight

Langkawi is a premier location for observing raptors in their natural habitat. Among the commonly seen species are the White-bellied Sea Eagle, Brahminy Kite, Changeable Hawk-Eagle, Jerdon’s Baza, Crested Serpent Eagle, Crested Goshawk, and the Japanese Sparrowhawk.

The White-bellied Sea Eagle, Brahminy Kite, and Changeable Hawk-Eagle are resident species that nest on the island. Their nesting season typically occurs between the months of November and April, providing birders with excellent opportunities to observe their breeding behaviors.

BRAHMINY KITE (Haliastur indus)

The Brahminy Kite is the most ubiquitous bird of prey in Langkawi. Local folklore often suggests that the island’s name is derived from this bird (Helang for eagle, and Kawi for the reddish-brown color of its plumage). While its connection to the island's name remains a subject of debate, it has undoubtedly become the symbol of Langkawi.

These birds are highly adaptable scavengers and hunters, feeding over both water and land. They are frequently observed taking offal from the water's surface and have even adapted to foraging for roadkills in more developed areas.
