LOVE IS IN THE AIR — BIRD NESTING SEASON IN LANGKAWI

Field Notes by Sri Sari | Published February 2011

February in Langkawi marks the beginning of a spectacular natural phenomenon. As the dry season takes hold, the island's avian residents begin their elaborate courtship rituals. From the high canopies of the rainforest to the dense mangroves, love is truly in the air.

COURTSHIP AND NESTING OBSERVATIONS

During our recent expeditions, we have observed fascinating breeding behaviors across several species:

  • Great Hornbills: The giants of the forest are currently scouting for suitable nesting holes in tall Emergent trees. We have witnessed males "feeding" females as part of their pair-bonding ritual.
  • White-bellied Sea Eagles: These raptors are busy refurbishing their massive stick nests high above the coastline. Their aerial displays are a common sight over the Kilim river.
  • Small Passerines: Sunbirds and Flowerpeckers are actively collecting spider webs and fine fibers to construct their delicate, hanging nests.

THE BIOLOGY OF THE DRY SEASON

The timing is no coincidence. Nesting during the dry season ensures that chicks fledge when food is most abundant and the weather is stable. For birdwatchers, this is the most rewarding time to visit, as birds are highly active, vocal, and often found near their established nesting sites.
