MY VERY OWN SWAMP — CONSERVATION THROUGH REFORESTATION

Media Archive | Weekend Telegraph (April 1997)

In April 1997, the Weekend Telegraph published an insightful feature by Paul Mansfield titled "My Very Own Swamp." The article provided a firsthand account of the critical work being done deep within the Malaysian rainforest, where Mansfield joined Irshad Mobarak - Naturalist to contribute directly to nature conservation through mangrove planting.

The Importance of the Mangrove Ecosystem:
Mangroves are often the unsung heroes of the coastal environment, acting as vital carbon sinks and nurseries for countless marine species. The 1997 feature highlighted the shift from passive observation to active participation in conservation. By planting mangroves, volunteers and guests were not just visiting a destination; they were helping to secure the ecological future of the archipelago.

Decades of Restoration:
At JungleWalla, the spirit of "My Very Own Swamp" remains alive. The trees planted during those early expeditions now form part of a thriving ecosystem that protects our coastlines and supports a rich diversity of wildlife. This long-term vision—documented nearly thirty years ago—continues to define our mission to rehabilitate and protect the UNESCO Global Geopark.

We believe that every individual has a role to play in conservation. Whether through education or direct action, we invite our guests to understand the profound impact that restoring a single "swamp" can have on the health of our planet.
