NORTH MALAYA — THE EASTERN BIRDING ROUTE

JungleWalla Nature Journal | 11-Day Expedition Itinerary

This expedition is designed to minimize travel time between sites (3-4 hours) while maximizing birding opportunities through scenic routes. Below is the detailed itinerary covering Northern Malaysia's premier habitats.

KUALA GULA & MAXWELL HILL (Days 1 - 3)

Coastal Tidal Mudflats, Mangrove Forests, and Lower Montane Transitions.

Target Species: Milky Stork, Lesser Adjutant, Terek Sandpiper, Bar-tailed Godwit, Brown-headed Gull, Mountain Peacock-Pheasant, Cutia, and Dark-handed Gibbon.

SEDIM FOREST RESERVE (Day 4)

Eyeball-level birding via the world’s longest canopy walkway.

Target Species: Banded Kingfisher, Red-bearded Bee-eater, Diard’s Trogon, Dusky Broadbill, and various Bulbul, Barbet, and Sunbird species.

ROYAL BELUM STATE PARK (Days 5 - 7)

Virgin Rainforest and Inland Lake Systems.

Target Species: All 10 Malaysian Hornbill species (including Plain-pouched, Great, and Helmeted), Lesser Fish-Eagle, and potential sightings of Malayan Tiger or Asian Elephant.

LANGKAWI ARCHIPELAGO (Days 8 - 11)

Lowland Rainforest, Mangrove Estuaries, and Limestone Forest Specialties.

Target Species: Brown-winged Kingfisher, Mangrove Pitta, Great Slaty Woodpecker, Orange-breasted Trogon, and Mountain Hawk-Eagle.
