Wildlife Profile | Nocturnal Wonders of Langkawi
One of the most thrilling sights in Langkawi’s ancient rainforest occurs just as the sun sets. The Red Giant Flying Squirrel (Petaurista petaurista), with its deep mahogany fur and impressive wingspan, emerges from its hollow tree den to begin its nocturnal odyssey. Despite their name, these creatures don't actually fly like birds. Instead, they use a specialized membrane called a patagium that stretches from their wrists to their ankles, allowing them to glide effortlessly for distances of up to 75 meters or more between the towering trees of the canopy.Key Facts:
- Size: They are among the largest squirrels in the world, with a total length (including tail) often exceeding 80cm.
- Diet: Primarily folivores, they feed on leaves, shoots, fruits, and occasionally insects.
- Ecology: They play a vital role in seed dispersal, helping maintain the health of Langkawi's 130-million-year-old jungle.
