RESIDENT OTTER FAMILY — THE CHARMING NEIGHBORS OF KILIM RIVER

Wildlife Profile | Mangrove Ecosystems

The Kilim River is home to many wonders, but few are as endearing as our resident family of Asian Small-clawed Otters (Aonyx cinereus). Often seen frolicking along the muddy banks or swimming in tight-knit groups, this family has become a symbol of the rich, healthy ecosystem within the Langkawi UNESCO Global Geopark.

As the smallest otter species in the world, they are incredibly social animals. They live in extended family groups where every member plays a part in raising the young and defending their territory. Their presence is a vital indicator of water quality; since they feed primarily on crabs, snails, and small fish, they thrive only where the environment is clean and undisturbed.

Observing them in the wild reveals their playful nature and high intelligence. They are often heard before they are seen, communicating with a variety of high-pitched chirps and whistles. Watching them use their dexterous, hand-like paws to forage among the mangrove roots is a highlight for any nature enthusiast visiting the island.
