COLUGO — THE FINAL RETURN

PART 5: BYE-BYE COLUGO – THE FINAL RETURN

The Colugo Chronicles | Field Notes by Sri Sari

After nine intensive days of care, it became clear that "Mama Colugo" was ready to reclaim her freedom. Her restless spirit could no longer be contained within baskets or cages; she began gliding across the room and hanging from curtains, a clear sign of stress and a powerful urge to return to her true home.

THE RELEASE AT DATAI BAY

On the morning of April 2nd, the team—Irshad, Shakira, and Anita—transported her back to the very area in Datai Bay where she was first discovered. Though her wounds were not entirely dry, her strength and agility made the decision for us. The moment the basket was opened, she leaped out with instinctive speed, racing up the trunk of a rainforest giant without a single backward glance.

A SURVIVOR'S STORY

Success in wildlife rehabilitation is measured by survival in the wild. We are heartened to report that Shakira has spotted the mother multiple times since her release. On April 22nd, she was seen thriving in the vicinity between The Andaman and The Datai. Despite having only one functional eye, she has adjusted remarkably well to the canopy, proving the resilience of these incredible gliders.

This journey from a critical injury to a successful release was made possible by the dedicated care of the JungleWalla team. It serves as a reminder of the delicate balance we strive to maintain in Langkawi’s ecosystems.
