The data derived from this project is a significant cornerstone of the Rainforest Aid initiative. The project launched with an in-depth presentation on the Natural History of Hornbills in Langkawi, led by Senior Naturalist Irshad Mobarak. He detailed the life history, behavior, and the critical state of Langkawi’s depleting rainforests, which threatens the survival of these iconic birds and the island's broader biodiversity.
Participants engaged in a mini-workshop covering the use of birding binoculars and count sheets. Early the following day, ten teams—each led by a JungleWalla naturalist—ascended Gunung Raya to begin the census. One of the most remarkable sightings was a pair of Great Hornbills training and feeding their adolescent chick near the foothills, a promising sign of a new generation surviving despite environmental challenges.
CONSERVATION THROUGH CITIZEN SCIENCE
By the end of the day, all teams successfully reported sightings of the three resident hornbill species on Gunung Raya. This collective effort not only provided valuable data for the Seeds Bank and reforestation projects but also earned participants the Rainforest Aid certificate, marking their contribution to Langkawi's conservation.
