BROWN-WINGED KINGFISHER — THE PRIDE OF THE MANGROVES

Target Bird Species | Mangrove Ecology

The Brown-winged Kingfisher (Pelargopsis amauroptera) is a true specialist of the coastal mangroves and one of the most sought-after sightings for birdwatchers visiting Langkawi. Restricted to the eastern coasts of the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea, Langkawi remains one of the best locations in the region to observe this bird in its natural habitat.

Characterized by its massive bright red bill, pale orange head, and distinctive brown wings, this kingfisher is significantly larger than many of its cousins. It is a hardy predator, primarily feeding on crustaceans and small fish within the muddy tidal flats. Unlike the more common Collared Kingfisher, the Brown-winged is a shy and elusive species, often perched deep within the shaded canopy of the Rhizophora trees, requiring patience and a keen eye to spot.

At JungleWalla, we monitor the resident populations of these birds to understand their nesting and feeding patterns. Protecting the integrity of the mangrove corridors is essential for their survival. While nature is unpredictable and sightings can never be guaranteed, our professional naturalists use their extensive field knowledge to provide the best possible opportunities for guests to observe this remarkable kingfisher during our specialized birding excursions.
