THE GLIDING WONDER — ENCOUNTERS WITH THE COLUGO

One of Langkawi’s most enigmatic residents is the Sunda Flying Lemur, also known as the Colugo (Galeopterus variegatus). Despite its name, the Colugo is not a lemur and it doesn't fly; it is a master glider, possessing a large skin membrane that extends to its tail and even between its fingers. During the day, the Colugo is a master of disguise. Its mottled grey and white fur blends perfectly with the bark of the dipterocarp trees, making it almost invisible to the untrained eye. It clings vertically to tree trunks, remaining motionless for hours to avoid predators like eagles.

Master of the Night Sky

As dusk falls, the Colugo becomes active. It is a leaf-eater, moving through the canopy in search of young shoots and flowers. To move from tree to tree, it launches itself into the air, spreading its membrane to glide gracefully over distances of up to 100 meters with minimal loss in height. It is truly a prehistoric wonder, representing a lineage that has survived for millions of years.
