RAPTOR WATCH 2009 — A SPECTACLE OF MIGRATION

Birding History | Migratory Research

Every year, one of nature's most spectacular migrations unfolds in the skies over the Straits of Malacca. Raptor Watch 2009 was a milestone event where JungleWalla joined birders and conservationists from around the world to witness and record thousands of migratory birds of prey as they made their journey back to their breeding grounds in the north.

The primary focus of Raptor Watch is the monitoring of species such as the Oriental Honey-buzzard, Black Baza, and Grey-faced Buzzard. These birds rely on thermals to cross the sea, making Tanjung Tuan a critical observation point. For JungleWalla, participating in these counts is essential for understanding the health of flyways and the impact of climate and habitat changes on these apex predators.

Our involvement in Raptor Watch since 2009 has allowed us to refine our knowledge and expertise in raptor identification and conservation. We carry these insights back to Langkawi, ensuring that our guests receive the most accurate and scientifically backed information during our birdwatching excursions. It is through these collective efforts that we can advocate for the protection of the international corridors these birds depend on for survival.
