RAPTOR WATCH — THE SPECTACLE OF MIGRATION

By Nurhidayah (Daia) | JungleWalla Nature Guide

For many raptor species, traveling south is a necessity for survival. This migration allows them to breed and raise their young in environments that offer plentiful food sources, longer daylight hours, and relatively fewer competitors. To overcome the perils of such a long journey, these birds have developed ingenious adaptations, including larger wingspans, advanced navigational capabilities, and the capacity to store significant fat reserves for energy.

THE SCIENCE OF NAVIGATION

How do these birds navigate thousands of miles from their native habitats and successfully make the return journey? Research indicates they are capable of reading the vibration of polarized light and tapping into the Earth’s magnetite field, acting as an internal biological compass.

Furthermore, much of this route information is inherited as part of their genetic code. During flight, they rely heavily on visual cues and topography, often following coastlines and rivers to stay on course.

TANJUNG TUAN: A RAPTOR BOTTLE-NECK

Malaysia is home to approximately 41 species of birds of prey. While seeing a single eagle is common, witnessing a massive flock of up to 3,000 individuals is a transformative experience. This is the star attraction of the annual Raptor Watch event held at Tanjung Tuan, Port Dickson.

Observing these magnificent birds through binoculars often reveals worn and lost feathers—a stark testament to the weariness and grit required for their migration. It is imperative that the habitats supporting their arrival are preserved, ensuring future generations of these species can continue their ancient journey safely to our shores.
