JOBS OF JOY — THE NATURALIST’S CALLING

For Irshad Mobarak, the path to becoming Langkawi’s most prominent naturalist was paved with a radical shift in perspective. Once a corporate banker, Irshad left the financial world behind to follow a calling that offered a different kind of wealth: the preservation of Malaysia’s natural heritage. This journey led to his recognition as one of the "Amazing Malaysians" in 2007.

EDUCATING THE NEXT GENERATION

Through the DiGi Amazing Malaysians program, Irshad took on the mission of mentorship. He shared his vast knowledge with 100 students from SRK Seri Negeri and SRK Kelibang, teaching them that conservation is not just about looking at trees, but understanding the interconnectedness of all living things.

“It is not enough to just show them the birds; they must understand why the forest matters to the birds, and why the birds matter to us,” Irshad remarked. His sessions involved hands-on exploration of Langkawi’s ecosystems, turning the island into a living classroom.

A LEGACY OF CONSERVATION

The "Jobs of Joy" featured in this article reflects the core philosophy of JungleWalla: that work driven by passion and environmental stewardship brings the greatest rewards. Nearly two decades later, the children Irshad mentored have grown, but the mission to protect Langkawi's fragmented habitats continues with the same intensity.
