THE MAKING OF ECO WARRIORS — REFORESTING GUNUNG RAYA 2008

Conservation History | Youth Education

In August 2008, a significant step was taken toward the ecological restoration of Langkawi’s highest peak. Under the "The JungleWallah of Langkawi" program, 98 students of various ages—our "Eco Warriors"—gathered to plant 500 trees across deforested areas of Gunung Raya and several premier resorts on the island.

This ambitious initiative was made possible through the corporate social responsibility (CSR) sponsorship of DiGi Malaysia, with the Malaysian Nature Society (MNS) and JungleWalla managing the field operations. The goal was clear: to enhance wildlife corridors by planting specific tree species designed to attract birds and small mammals, ensuring these areas remain vibrant habitats for years to come.

The program extended beyond the mountainside to include partnerships with The Datai, The Andaman, Four Seasons Langkawi, and Mutiara Burau Bay Resort. These resorts committed to nurturing the saplings planted on their grounds. We also extend our gratitude to Gunung Raya Resort for preparing the planting sites. With an annual target of 4,000 trees, this 2008 milestone was a foundational moment in our mission to turn the younger generation into the future custodians and protectors of Langkawi’s fragile nature.

Today, nearly two decades later, those saplings have matured into a thriving canopy, proving that dedicated community and corporate collaboration can leave a lasting green legacy on our island.
