Marine History | Coral Ecosystems & Conservation
The Andaman Reef has a long history, but it was the 2004 tsunami that changed everything. Once a carpet of brilliant corals, the giant waves broke many of the huge colonies off of the reef edge and sent them crashing into the shallower areas, leaving a trail of destruction in their wake.
Before the tsunami, the reef at Datai Bay was a flourishing underwater garden. However, the force of nature in 2004 shifted the landscape, scattering coral fragments and altering the biodiversity of the bay. Understanding this history is crucial to realizing why our current rehabilitation efforts are so significant.
A coral reef is more than just beauty; it is a protective barrier and a nursery for countless marine species. While the scars of the tsunami remain, they serve as a reminder of the reef's resilience and the ongoing need for human stewardship to help nature recover.
