Once in a while, we receive a pleasant surprise. Instead of choosing regular holiday tours, some groups decide to give back to nature and the local community.
Kelvin Seow, Regional Manager for The Covidien Group, a leading medical equipment supplier, selected several JungleWalla CSR projects as part of the company’s conference held on the island of Langkawi. The area and community chosen for this initiative was the village of Kuala Teriang. The three activities carried out were Rainforest Aid at Kuala Melaka River Park, Mangrove Aid at the Kuala Teriang mudflats, and Fish for the Future for the Kuala Teriang fishing community. The morning began beautifully, but just before the event started, a storm rolled in. Despite the wet conditions, the Covidien team showed remarkable spirit and carried on with the projects. In total, the group of 180 staff planted 120 rainforest trees and donated an additional 30 trees to Pelangi Beach Resort, where they were staying. They also planted approximately 250 mangrove seedlings and helped build 3 out of 22 Fish Aggregating Devices (FADs) for the local fishing community. We are also pleased to report that permission was secured from LADA and the local Department of Drainage and Irrigation to reforest Sungai Melaka. In addition, we were offered the opportunity to adopt another river, an initiative we are very keen to pursue. Event Date: 20 October 2008 Photography: Madi
